Pedro Ballesteros MW on Llopart Original 1887: “so close to perfection”
Subirats, February 17th, 2021. The Master of Wine (MW) Pedro Ballesteros has awarded Llopart Original 1887 with 97 points and describes it as “pure Penedès” and “so close to perfection”. Ballesteros analyzes the sparkling wines from Spain and the latest trends in a market that, as he puts it, has become “increasingly fragmented”, but where “overall quality has risen”.
According to Ballesteros, there are two key factors that are common in the best wines: the care for the vineyard (connected to organic or biodynamic viticulture and the uniqueness of each vineyard or plot) and long aging. The Original 1887 embodies these two attributes: is made from grapes that come from the unique vineyards named Les Flandes, a setting surrounded by Mediterranean forest and aromatic plants, rich in biodiversity, where the vines grow with limited vigor on Miocene soils (20 million years old); and ages for more than 120 months.
Both the name and the design of the bottle, that features a reproduction of an original lithography from the 19th century, are homage to the first Llopart sparkling wine the family ever made, in 1887.
Llopart, Original 1887 Brut Nature, Corpinnat 2009 · 97 points
So close to perfection. An organic blend of Xarel. lo, Macabeo and Montònega (a local biotype of Parellada) that’s far more than the sum of its parts. Delicious, with a refined old-wine texture, but fresh fruit and elegant lees ageing expression. Slow, open finish. It’s all about balance, and worlds apart from Champagne: pure Penedès.
The best Llopart wine I’ve tasted.
